Sudan: Correction - Intisar Sharif Abdulla still in custody
SIHA is sorry to have to correct its statement of Thursday June 19th that Intisar Sharif Abdallah, who had been sentenced to death by stoning for alleged adultery on 22nd of April 2012 by Ombadah/Omdurman criminal court, had been unconditionally released. This information given to us by Omdurman prison staff proved to be wrong.
In fact, the appeal court of Karari/Omdurman referred the case back to the local court for further investigation. The appeal court based its decision on the fact that Intisar was not legally represented during the trial, making the conviction invalid. It further ordered a re-trial of the co-accused Lutfi Abu Alroos. The first session of Intisar's new trial is scheduled for *Sunday July 1st 2012*.
In the meantime, Intisar herself was transferred to police custody on Wednesday, where she is held up to now. SIHA lawyers together with lawyers from SEEMA center are currently working for her release on bail, which will most likely happen today or tomorrow.
Our lawyers had the chance today to meet with Intisar and get an impression of her and her baby's condition. Both of them are exhausted, but physically ok. They also had the chance to talk to Intisar about the further (legal) proceedings and what will happen next. Contact to the family has also been established.
SIHA is coordinating with SEEMA and Muta'winat to ensure Intisar's good legal representation and general well-being.
