Video: Interview with Professor Heiner Bielefeldt, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief

MRG’s Head of Programmes, Shobha Das, interviews the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Professor Heiner Bielefeldt, on religious freedom around the world, particularly in Pakistan.

Professor Bielefeldt discusses the controversy surrounding The Age of the Innocents film, as well as some of the positive responses to the video from around the world. He also identifies barriers to freedom of religion, including blasphemy laws, and reflects on the tensions between freedoms of expression and religion, as well as how they can be mutually supportive.

The interview was shown at Pakistan’s Fifteenth Sustainable Development Conference in December 2012, and touches on a number of key issues which Minority Rights Group have campaigned on in Pakistan, such as the way in which Pakistan’s blasphemy laws disproportionately affect minorities.
