Argentina: MRG report on health launched at UNICEF event

MRG’s annual flagship report State of the World’s Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2013, which this year focuses on health, was launched in Argentina this week on the Day of the Children of the Mountains 2013. The cacique of the Amaicha del Valle community, Dr Eduardo Nieva, spoke alongside report authors Dr Viviana Crivelli of the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (UNT), and Professor Carolyn Stephens of the UCL Institute of Health Equity and the UNT. Around 800 people from the high Andean Valles Calchaqui of Tucumán attended the event, which was supported by UNICEF Argentina.

The report presents a global picture of the health inequalities experienced by minorities and indigenous communities. The report was launched globally in September to coincide with a United Nations General Assembly meeting to follow up on efforts made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and says that ill-health and poor healthcare are often consequences of discrimination.

Authors Crivelli and Stephens wrote a chapter on indigenous child and maternal health, in which they call for disaggregated data on indigenous populations and increased recognition of indigenous peoples' contribution to medicine and health internationally.
