UK/Global: Indigenous leaders gather in London to highlight need to protect forests

Indigenous leaders from Latin America and Southeast Asia came together in a month-long tour around Europe aiming to raise awareness on the environmental challenges they are facing. In their visit to London, the Guardians of the Forests explained how deforestation, land grabbing, criminalization and mass killings are affecting them and their communities, and how these issues affect the world. MRG attended the demonstraton to document the issues affecting indigenous communities and the forests in which they live.

Forest guardians from Honduras, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Indonesia and the Philippines, spoke with politicians, policy designers, environmentalists, business leaders, NGOs and grassroots organizations about the different ways we can help improve their situation and halt today's global environmental crisis.

Now gathered at the COP23 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, the indigenous leaders will contribute to important discussions about climate change. Their culture and their knowledge of the world’s forests is vital to ways forward in stopping climate change, and it is hoped their demonstrations across Europe will inspire the international community to protect their rights.
