UK: Dale Farm residents resist controversial eviction by Basildon Council
These pictures were taken on 20 September at Dale Farm in Basildon, Essex, UK, which is home to 90 Traveller, Romani and Gypsy families. The land, a former scrapyard, is owned by the families and is the UK's largest Traveller settlement. Part of Dale Farm was granted permission for residential use by Basildon Council. However the portion of the land where around 400 people now face eviction has repeatedly been denied planning permission for residential use and deemed ‘unauthorised' by the local authorities.
The residents refuse to leave their homes and, supported by a large protest movement, are determined to stay and fight for their rights.
These pictures show how they are planning to oppose an army of bailiffs who are stationed at a yard adjacent to Dale Farm.
