ZIMBABWE POLICE BLOCK GUKURAHUNDI GENOCIDE MEMORIAL IN MATOBO

The Zimbabwe government today sent heavily armed Zimbabwe Republic Police Officers to Matobo District to stop an Ibhetshu Likazulu organized Gukurahundi genocide memorial.

The armed and larged Shona speaking police sealed off the road from the main road to Bhalagwe memorial site. Even efforts by scores of villagers and ZAPU Intelligence supremo Dr Dumiso Dabengwa to talk to them to let the event continue failed.

Bhalagwe is a significant site for the Gukurahundi genocide as it is the place that was used by the government sectarian and tribal 5th Brigade army to torture and kill thousands of innocent Ndebele civilians who were abducted from various places of the Matabeleland region. Bhalagwe was used as a torture and concentration camp and many who died were thrown into the mine shaft.

The behaviour of the police and the government is a clear indication that the current government is unrepented of its crimes and is still bent on violating the rights of any that seek justice for the Gukurahundi genocide crimes.

As Matabeleland Institute for Human Rights, a human rights watched concerned with the promotion, protection and fulfilment of human rights in Matabeleland we condemn this brazen act of justice denial and call on the progressive parliamentarians and international community to help the people of Matabeleland seek justice for the Gukurahundi genocide crimes.
