Mbanderu Community in Botswana-Minority Voice
The Ovambanderu Community in Botswana originated from Namibia and settled in Botswana in 1904 after there were displaced by the Germans who colonised Namibia. The Community is widely spread across Botswana with the majority of them residing in the North Western part of Botswana and symbolised by their unique attire.
As a result of their migration from their native land and influence from the Tswana tribes they found in Botswana their culture and mother tongue was facing acute social problems especially among the youth. The pride and dignity of the Ovambanderu tribe was also gradually dying.
Realising this, the Ovambandeuru Youth of Botswana found the need to mobilise the Mbanderu Youth in Botswana for the purpose of addressing this issues and now formed a social group known as Mbanderu Youth Association of Botswana (MYAB). The Mbanderu Youth Association of Botswana (MYAB) drafted its constitution through consultation with their elders and it was formally registered in 1999 with registar of companies as a non-profit making association. Along with other tribes in Botswana the Mbanderu Community in Botswana are regarded as minority groups and the mother tongue language is at risk of extinction.
MYAB therefore exist to ensure that the rights and culture of the Ovambanderu people in Botswana are promoted and protected. Furthermore, the association aims at preserving the rich Mbanderu Cultural heritages through language development, advocacy, collaboration and documentation.
The Mbanderu Youth Association of Botswana other objectives include participation in the national issues and to forge and network with organisations that are pursuing similar or related objects with us. To that effect MYAB is an affiliate of RETENG: The Multicultural Coalition of Botswana which aims at developing culture and celebrating the diversity of cultures.
MYAB has established its Headquarters at Sehitwa and secured a plot to build a cultural village where cultural art facets would be displayed and sold to generate revenue for the Association. However, due to lack of funds the project has been delayed since the association has not secured a reliable funder for the project.
Since its inception the association is upholding its constitutional requirements such as holding a General Membership Conference annually where national matters are discussed. A national congress is called every 2 years to elect the Executive Board. It is also worthwhile to mention that in 2008 the association developed and adopted a financial policy to ensure good and sound financial management and also aim to attract donors or potential financiers.
